To access your smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops remotely, you can use remote desktop software such as TeamViewer and LogMeIn. These remote-access software are secure and easy to users and also remains at the top to implement remote-access functionalities across devices.
If you’re using Chrome browser (or Torch browser) then you can achieve these remote-access features by nothing but a small chrome extension. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using Windows or Mac OS X (unfortunately, this extension is not available for Linux users), all you need is to install Chrome Remote Desktop extension to remote access your computer.
Chrome Remote Desktop: Installation & Configuration
Firstly, visit Chrome Remote Desktop extension page at Google Chrome Webstore. Click ‘Add to Chrome’ button available at the top-right corner of the pop-up box.
Now, you need to install this extension on the computers where you want to access machines remotely. Start from the machine you want have full control. Well, it is a quite large extension (size about 22.6MB) but it will download and get installed to your chrome very quickly
When Chrome Remote Desktop extension will get installed, open a new tab and you’ll find the extension in the list of installed apps for your chrome.
Click Chrome Remote Desktop icon. When you will run it for the first time, it will ask you for permission to access your computer. Just ‘allow’ it to grant permissions. Make sure that you’ve signed in to your Google account at Google Chrome.
Now, the extension will let you to connect remote computers. Chrome Remote Desktop can be used in two ways: to offer remote assistance to someone or to take remote control of another computer of your own. Click “Enable Remote Connections” button at My Computers section.
Now, as a security measure, the extension will ask you to choose a PIN to protect your computer. So, enter a secure PIN code )at least 6-digits long), enter it again and press OK, finally.
You’ll also need to enter the PIN at User Access Control (UAC) dialog box that will instantly appear to permit the changes. Just enter the PIN and click Confirm followed by OK.
Now, move on to the computer that you want to control using the previous computer. Follow all the provided steps there too. While allowing the extension for you Google account at new PC make sure that you’re using the same Google account. Authorize the extension for your Google account.
Now, on the next step, you’ll be able to see the connected devices. So, what you’ll see here is your computer where you’ve set up Chrome Remote Desktop previously. By default, it is named as the name of the machine but you can change its name by clicking on pencil icon available at the right side.
Now, you have configured both PC well to use Chrome Remote Desktop extension and set-up remote access feature. Just click on the name of connected computer, enter the PIN and hit ‘Connect’.
Now, you are accessing the connected computer remotely using this new machine. Its better to toggle to full-screen so that you can get a better remote-browsing experience.
The ‘disconnect’ button at the bottom is self-explanatory. “Send keys” allow you to send key combination to remote desktop without getting interrupted by local machine. “Screen Options” will allow you to toggle to full screen, or set up resolution, height-width etc. for better browsing.
